AVALANCHE!

« on: October 18, 2004, 05:39:12 AM »

Can someone teach me how to putt?  Roll Eyes  PLEASE?!?!?
I suck!  I hit 15 of 18 greens yesterday and had four 3 putts!  Angry  And shot 78...  Robby and Derek can vouch for my lack of putting skills.
I need help!  Do you think going to the belly is my answer?

e,
i think you should just start playing automatic two putts unless you are inside the putter length.

just get a putter that faces the other way and stand on the opposite side of the ball as normal.  then take your hat and turn it sideways and move all your change and stuff into the other pocket.  you already look like a idiot so dont worry about that stuff.  alwasy works,  i guarantee it wont get any worse! Get Bob Rotellas: "Putting Out of Your Mind" on Audio tape.

it's about 30 minutes long and a wonderful tape to listen to when going to work...or to the golf course...

My philosophy on golf (and life) is people tend to "over think" and make big issues when small fixes are all that's needed.

Anytime my putting goes bad, I polay this tape and it all goes back to being the high point of my game.

try it.

Exactly.  When I am putting well, I don't think a lot.  I just focus on the line I want to hit the putt, and somehow the speed just comes naturally.  It's almost scary in a way.  I think the most effective drill you can do, is the ladder drill.

Place a tee at 3ft, 5ft, and 7ft from the hole.  Make three in  a row from 3 ft, then move to 5 ft.  Make three putts in a row from 5ft, then move back to 7ft and make three in a row.  If you miss one putt at any time, start over.   Don't cheat.  If you stick to it, you will be a great short range putter, especially under pressure .

E is the only person I have ever heard of one hopping a putt in the hole. It'll get better. This is the tiime of year everybody putts bad. The greens are starting to get worse and go dormant, or hairy if they overseed. So just keep at it and you'll find eventually. My putting stats are misleading. I don't have a lot of putts per round, but I miss every green. I have a lot of one putts because I'm chipping on every hole. Those 3 putts hurt though.

Sandman,
It's not just the "time of year" being the reason I'm putting bad.  I putt that bad ALL THE TIME!  Cry

Ever try left hand low or cross handed if you prefer. I experiment with cross handed putting sometimes, it feels weird after putting in the conventional manner for so many years but cross handed has its' merits.

I'd give anything to be an "average" putter!  Roll Eyes If I could 2 putt every green (hit in regulation) and 1 putt the ones I don't, I'd shoot some great scores.  But my putting is what ALWAYS holds me back...  Cry

leftygolfr,

i was a terrible putter as a junior and probably lost out on some scholarships due to this fact.  i quit playing when i went to college for about five yrs and started back up about two yrs ago.  the sad thing is that i have never putted better in my entire life as i am right now.

i don't think this is the answer for you - to quit golf - but maybe try to rearrange your thinking and simply look at putts as if they aren't important in the grand scheme of things.  if i have doubts of whether i am going to miss a putt nowdays, i shift the thought to stuff i am proud of - my dogs for instance.  i seem to remember (could be wrong) on another board that you have a wife and child.  maybe you could think of them and realize that if you blow the putt that it doesn't really matter.  once you quit worrying about making the putt they always seem to fall.

didn't mean to get all deep here.  this has just worked for me.  btw - nice to see all you guys over here.

eric.

edit - after rereading.  i would also like to advocate the cross handed style.  i think that it has benefited me greatly
