I imagine we have all done something similar to Rory at our home course. Remember the last time you played behind a group of four guys who never heard of "being ready to play your ball" and they take nine practice swings and then hit it 30 yards? Did you just sit there and say "hey, that's golf"?  Yesterday was a perfect example. First round of our Member/Member tourney. We were the first tourney players to tee off. A foursome of tourists was in front of us and they obviously hadn't played since last fall and were all very poor golfers. The average score for each of their holes was around a 12. Add 9 practice swings, multiple walks back to the cart for a different club, and waiting for the green to clear on a par 5 from 280 out when they hit it 200 off the tee and you can easily see why each hole was taking over 20 minutes. We called the clubhouse and asked them to send a ranger out. That worked for a few holes then they fell back into their slow play. On one tee shot one of the guys hit it into a marsh about 40 yards in front of tee. His ball came to rest on the far side of the marsh and he could take a stance but the lie was terrible. We stood on the tee watching him push his ball around to get a better lie inside the hazard. We had had about enough and one of our group yelled.......

"IF YOUR ARE GOING TO CHEAT PLEASE JUST PUT IT ON THE FAIRWAY!!!"

Slow play is the bane of the game and I commend Rory for being a bit of  an ass but also trying to play within the spirit of the game. Watching Crane live is a painful experience. If he played at our course he would be ridiculed.

Never like him at all. His overall mannerism just gets on my nerves. How he almost always shake his head and chew his gum.  tickedoff He is just too aggressive for my likings. The one incident that made me even more pissed with him was the slow play by Ben Crane. His actions was just downright rude. Moreover, he was the marker for Ben, wasn't he? How could he walk off before Ben finished the hole? What score was he going to record if he weren't there to witness? Can he still sign Ben's scorecard?

The Rory/Ben scenario was discussed, ad naseum, last year.  I will most certianly agree that Rory's actions were not in the spirit of the game.  Zinger, Faldo... most said exactly what seems to be the general consensus here...  Crane was slow, but the way Rory handled it was wrong!  That was last year, and here we are today...  There just seems to be an aire about Sabbatini that "grates" me.  Can't explain it.  But, that doesn't take away from how well this young man has played this year.  Did anyone read the article in Golf World?  That article sure changed some of my negativism.  Sabbatini was catching all kinds of flack after his "display" last year.  He realized that not only was he embittering himself in the eyes of the media, his temper and attitude was affecting his ability to play his best.  Over the off season, he dedicated himself to change.  Slow down... Rory is now keeping his own yardage book.  That occupies his time and slows him down a bit.  He is doing everything he can to manage his temper.  AFter the win, I think he has done remarkably.  Coming down the last few holes, the crowd was certainly cheering for Couples.  Freddy was the crowd favorite.  And, there was some who were cheering against Rory.  Some of the crow comments were probably powered by a few too many cold ones.... but, Sabbatini kept his cool and finished the round for a win.

The thing that not only amazes me, but actually begins to endear this guy is the deal with his irons on Sunday.  I've certainly traded clubs way too much.  Constantly looking for the Holy Grail of clubs.  A couple of sets of irons in the basement and nothing unusual to chage from Saturday to Sunday if something doesn't work.  Sabbatini was leading by 4 strokes after Saturday's round.  He was pulling the NVS's out of the bag and putting an old set of ProCombo's in.  His wife told him he was an idiot for even considering changing irons at that stage of the tourney.  He listened to her, kept the NVS's in the bag, and won!  See, we aren't the only ones to always thing it's the arrows not the Indian!!!
