Perhaps a dumb question, but I'm not that knowledgeable about club fitting...I recently bought a Cobra S2 3 wood with the standard shaft (men's "light/senior" flex - it's made for them by Fujikura) - and it feels quite a bit lighter than my old 3 wood. I haven't hit a solid shot with it maybe more than 1/10 times, I feel like I'm overswinging and I hit low line drives. When I demo'd this club in the spring I was killing it at the range. Could it be that the club's overall weight is affecting me that much? I'm striking the ball and playing well otherwise, so this is puzzling. If there is even a chance it is the club (ie, the hammer and not the carpenter) I want to get rid of it quickly while it still has some value. So I can buy something else winkey

What was your old three wood/shaft combination? And was the club you demo'd before buying the exact same club?

My guess is that the shaft is too light.  They put way to light of shafts in 3 woods.  I thought they use 65 gram shafts in their woods.

you might be able to drop in a heavier shaft and solve the problem.  Otherwise look for something with a little more weight in the stock shaft.  75-95 gram shafts work great for 3 woods.  I personally like my 95 gram Graman, but I've hit some good shafts in the 80 gram range too.

Exact same club I demo'd (I tried several other ones the same day and was hitting this great).
My old 3 wood is a Yonex V-Mass 400, 15 degrees, no offset. It's a proprietary Yonex graphite shaft, called UL-Titanium 7+. Have no idea what the weight is.
My theory is that in the early spring when I wasn't swinging as aggressively, the lighter club worked fine for me. Now, not so much.

Probably the carpenter then.  laugh

I go through crisis of confidence with clubs. Driver had been great for me for a long time and now its costing me strokes. Same club.
3 woods usually come down to trying to "help" the shot in some way instead of letting the loft do the work like you did in the Spring.

Damn, Divots, you burst my bubble. Actually before I give up on the club (because I really do like it) I'm going to the range to do a shoot out with the old and the new. If I can catch my Pro in an idle moment maybe he can help me figure it out. The Cobra shaft is only 55g, I did find that out.

Sounds like you are playing well though otherwise.  prop Maybe you picked up some swing speed with the progression of the season? If logic dictates, the shaft on your gamer 3 wood, 7 = 70 gram range? Might be a little light feeling in comparison @ 55 grams. Swingweights/balance points could be different as well. Cobra has been doing some counter balancing with some of the wood model shafts. If you like a heavier feel in 3 wood for more of a sense of control, that might be what is ultimately lacking with the lighter shaft. It would be interesting to have your swingweight at least measured on both clubs to see how they compare. Go mad scientist, take them all apart and measure all of the component weights and frequency the shafts? How nutty do ya wanna get?  laugh

Get a roll of 'high density' lead tape, some impact stickers, and go to work.  Start with a 10g strip on the back side of the shaft below the grip.  If this doesn't improve things enough, add some weight to the head.  If you still don't hit it good, then the shafts flex profile and or the head doesn't fit you well.

Cwebb-can you explain putting tape up towards the top of the shaft vs towards the bottom? Is it to give more weight feel closer to the hands?
I had thought about trying the tape but had assumed I would need to put it down by the ferrule.
