It is what it is.......

« on: July 26, 2010, 02:09:06 PM »

O.K. boys.....no laughing please.

So I'm getting ready to leave the desert in about 6 days...for good.  Our replacements are already here so I've got nothing to do for this whole week.  A bunch of guys are living at the freaking pool, working on their tans for their respective missus' when they get home.

I, on the other hand, have been going out to our driving range (if you can call it that) for about 2 hours a day...just trying to get my swing back.  Hell....I can take my shirt off and work on my golf swing and my tan at the same time.  Then maybe...just maybe...my missus will be happy....but that's another story.

Anyway.....I have already shipped my Hogan 8i and 4i back to the states so I am at the mercy of the 100s of no name beater clubs that have been left out at the range.  And I seriously mean 100s.

So...I'm digging around, trying to find something decent and I come across a Callaway Steelhead 9 iron.  O.K.....I never used the Steelhead....but this is a better choice than anything else out here.  After warming up with half-swing sand wedge shots, I start taking full swings with the Steelhead.  I was hitting it much better than I expected....and it felt pretty freaking good to.  I glance down at the shaft and it is a Rifle shaft "for Callaway.  I tell you what.....I was putting absolutely zero effort into the swings and the ball was just flying straight and true...swing after swing after swing.

I'm just curious.....does anybody know what shaft that Rifle was making for the Steelheads?  I've never been a Rifle "guy."  Never thought of myself as good enough to splurge for them.  But crap....this one felt really good for my swing tendencies....and the ball flight was awesome.

Anybody got a clue?

I should be back home in a week or two getting my a$$ handed to me by my 13 year old.  From the white tees....He's broken 40 three different times (9 hole rounds) now....and he's only been playing for two years.

I'm dead.

Thanks
Jody

Glad to hear you're coming home Jody.  Which model steelhead is it?  I know they used rifle shafts in the x16 pro series and I think in some of the x14 pro series.  I called Callaway customer service once to ask the flex of a set of x16 pro series with Rifle stiff in them and they told me 6.0.  If it's the x16 pro I'd guess it's the same.

I had X16's that had the tour rifles in them and it was close to 5.5 if I remember what Frank told me.

No clue on the irons but I did check the father-son handbook, you can use mental warfare on said teenager if said teenager is about to beat you at an athletic endeavor you've always dominated.  Threats of grounding, no use of the car, etc. are fair game.  In extreme circumstances, yelling "Noonan" in the back swing is also acceptable.  Just saying.

Thanks for the replies.  I'm not sure what model Steelhead that is is.  It just says "Steelhead" on it.  It has a considerable amount of offset and a big, thick, ugly topline.....but it flew straight.  That Rifle number - 6.0 or 5.5 - was what I was curious about.  I might have to check those out.

Thanks for the help.  If anybody has any other ideas....let me know.

Thanks

I'm guessing it was an X-14 or maybe the X-14 Pro series.

http://www.callawaygolfpreowned.com/steelhead-x-14-irons/irons-bb-x14,default,pd.html

Both the X-14 & X-14 Pro were available with Rifle shafts & in the cavity they said "STEELHEAD" in large font, while the "X-14" was very small.  Take a look around the Callaway pre-owned website, hopefully you'll be able to recognize it.  If the X-14 doesn't look like it - just keep working your way through the newer models....  X-16 / X-18 / X-20...  I'm sure you'll find it.

Yep...you were right...thanks.  I just looked at it and it does say X-14 in very small letters under the "Steelhead."

So...anybody know what that makes the Rifle?   5.5, 6.0, etc?

First, great to hear you are coming home Jody!  clapping yahoo
Probably be best to contact Callaway directly and go to the source. They should know (one would hope.)  prop

According to the link Jape sent you they come in both 5.5 and 6.0 IF you look under Mens/Right they have the 5.5s in stock, but if you under Mens/Left the have 6.0s.

Thanks.

I went out and busted the Steelhead again today....straight and true with a ballflight that I am unfamiliar with.  I looked at the shaft again.  It actually says "stiff" under the Rifle logo.

O.K...I'm an idiot.  Just went to Jape's link and it says that both 5.5 and 6.0 are considered stiff.

Just an FYI on the 5.5 vs. 6.0 deal, the 5.5 is a very weak stiff.  My dad had 5.5's installed in some Ping ISIs a few years back and they were balloon monsters.  He had originally had the Ping steel stiff shafts which gave him a great ball flight, but when he got the Rifles, everything was high and right.  This is just an assumption, but if you've got a ball flight that is lower and like a rocket, I'm guessing they are probably the 6.0s.  Just my 2 cents.
