Does anyone know why the tees are split at 1 and 9 instead of the usual 1 and 10?  I can't recall any tournament starting on 1 and 9.

It has something to do with the Metric System.

18 American holes, when converted to Canadian, become 17.

As you can see in the schematic, hole #9 ends way the hell away from the clubhouse. This isn't unique to this course in Canada, I've seen many others that are this way as well. Even one designed by Stanley Thompson.

By the way, Stanley Thompson gets a big nod in this corner (DBVogey's Corner) for being a great golf course architect.  I have played his course in Banff, Jasper, Igonish (The Highland Golf Links), and Niagara Falls (Whirlpool).  All are really fine layouts - the guy knew how to take what he was given and make a really fun, and challenging, golf course.

I was a member of a 9-hole course in Ft. Erie, Canada called Rio Vista that was allegedly originally laid out by Mr. Thompson.  There is a creek running through the property, with nice hills/rises on either side.  Thompson created some really fine holes along that creek - the rest of the course is what you would expect from a muni.

And neither is 3. What does hole #8 have to do with anything?

The tee of 9 is the closest to the clubhouse, hence why they use 1 and 9.

I've played on a course where they have a front 10 and a back 8. Nothing unusual.

We have a muni designed by him. It's a fairly short track, but uses the natural landscape to shape holes and make them decievingly difficult. Some long par 3's too, which are always a challenge to the mid-to-high handicapper.

The only knock I have on it is the name. "Tor Hill Golf Course" is somewhat redundant, and stupid. Other than that, a nice track to play every once in a while.

Didn't mean to stir up trouble.  You originally talked about where holes ended, not where they started.  I agree, 9th tee is the closest thing to a "turn" hole.

I didn't take your comment as "stirring the pot". No worries.  winkey

Perhaps my comment could have been more clear; traditionally, the 9th ends near the clubhouse, where in this case it doesn't. Which would lead you to believe that the 10th tee would be just as far away.

Either way, it is what it is. You still gotta play 18 holes.  laugh
