I prefer not to use steel extenders on graphite for the reason you suggested. Unless you are extending a club for a strong realease at the top you will probably be safe.
I use the plastic extenders from GOLFWORKS. I also like to use wood dowel, but that requires some sanding.
Too bad no one replyed before this.

yea, might be safer to pick up a plastic extender. Its just that I had some steel ones lying about. But theyre 1.99, so no biggie.

In addition to the plastic extenders which come in two diameters, there is also a aluminum extender option (2 extensions per piece).  I would not recommend putting the steel extenders in a graphite shaft. The plastic extensions are $1.99 each on golfsmith. Lastly, there is a universal plastic extender option that works for any diameter graphite shaft but be careful with these. Cost of a 6 pack of these are $14.99.

.535" diameter plastic $1.99
.485" diameter plastic $1.99

I make extenders from graphite shafts that I have hanging around my shop.

That is another really good way. I do the same thing when I don't have the plastic extenders in the shop.
