How do you guys determine what the proper grip size for someone should be?

When I was looking at this a couple years back I saw something from David Leadbetter. He says if you take your top hand (for a righty your left hand) and grip the very bottom of the grip (the fat part), your middle and ring finger should just barely touch the palm of your hand.
I tried this for about two years (two wraps in a midsize, i have big hands) and then I moved back down to the standard one wrap under a regular grip. I still keep the midsize grips on my wedges tho.

the typical taper grip makes this awkward to get correct.
First , you have to grip it so the heel of your hand sits a finger's width below the cap-end.
With leather grips and cords you didn't have to account for grip compression but with the softer compounds out now you want a small space of 1/16 between the ring finger and palm.
