I was in contact with dbvogey the other day and he mentioned to me that he likes to watch Tom Watson's video lessons as his swing thoughts make sense to him. Do you guys have a favorite that you find helpful? ..................and Larry, we know, we know!  |

I feel like I ought to clarify, lest it seems like I'm not taking the thread seriously: I just mean that remembering how much certain people struggle with the game reminds me of where I've gotten myself to. That's why seeing somebody like Barkley is good. |

Last night I watched to first of the two DVD's - Lessons for a Lifetime by Watson. It is the best instruction video I have seen.
If you are looking for secrets, or special moves that the pros make, you won't find it here. What you will find are detailed, and really interesting tips on taking your grip, taking your stance, and starting your backswing. Tom explains his "secret", the steady spine angle, and the golf plane in a very simple manner.
Since I love watching Tom hit shots, this video is a natural for me. If you like watching Tom's swing, I highly recommend it. Tomorrow night I'll be watching the second video, which deals with the short game. I think.
Btw, I also love watching youtube videos of Freddie, Sam Snead, and Hogan. I could never swing like Hogan, and would never teach Hogan's swing to anyone without super flexible wrists, but I love watching his action.

Great video. I hadn't seen that collection. I do believe that Shawn Clement has captured the Hogan tempo and rhythm, however. According to McLean and others, Hogan made the strongest transition weight shift of all pros--in his day and even today. NOBODY posts to their lead side better. But the secret is the rhythm-- and Shawn has the drill that teaches it--watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38rsy8ZNvM8&feature=fvwI have never been able to carry the rhythm of that little dance, the "plant-hit" sequence that makes us lead with hips like Hogan did- until I watched this video, practiced that rhythm-- and then did it on the range. Looks like his head moves quite a bit. (Campbell, that is.) Didn't he injure his neck doing some stupid ass yoga on his head upside down? Might have affected his ability to maintain his spine angle if the injury was bad enough. Another Duval-esque "training injury" that ended a career?? |

#1 one is without a doubt Hogan, but after watching the Open this week, I was thoroughly impressed with Greg Havret's swing. Good tempo and transition, stays on plane well, and get in a very solid position at the top. Really an all around great swing!

He got a lot out of that over-the-top hillbilly swing. Heard a story about Snead and Hogan. Apparently, they were playing together, and Hogan cracked a really good drive. As he walks off the tee, he says, under his breath, "Try to catch that one, you hillbilly." Well, Snead couldn't. And, Snead was damn long. By the way, that little over the top move is also seen in Bobby Jones' swing, and Denny Shoup, and a lot of other players from that period. My take? You need that little "over the top move" to keep from hooking the hell out of hickories, which is what all the players in that era learned with, in their formative years. |

I like Shawn Clement's YouTube and DVD swing concept, he deals with "feelings" rather than strict "get into this position" type thoughts. He gets a bit verbose but his analogies are easy to understand. He promotes a smooth & athletic swing that produces excellent results with little effort, just wish I could swing like that all the time.
When my rhythm is on I can take Shawn's swing to the course but when my rhythm is MIA, nothing helps & the game is pure torture.
Roger Gunn's "Take it to the next level" 10-DVD set is also worth owning. Just a good, common sense swing that doesn't drag you into 1PS, 2PS, MORAD, S 'n T, or whatever the swing of the day is.
