I'm Going Off The Rails On A Crazy Train...

« on: March 21, 2010, 08:07:00 AM »

Spring has finally made a commitment to stick around here in CT so Mikeldu and I met up at the Greens at Oxford this past Friday for my first round of the season.
I have two new additions to the bag this season –
The Hireko Acer XP’s that I put into play received a quick lie adjustment that I had neglected to do when I bought them late into the year and a SkyCaddie GPS unit that I recently picked up in the buy/sell forum here.

At this point of the season all you are thinking about is shaking off the rust and reestablishing your swing skills / thoughts.
The lie adjustments that I had done yielded all the results you read about and would expect.
Shots that last year would shoot left for me now were tracking straight and true to target.

Now then the other addition to the bag – The Skycaddie.

I downloaded a half dozen CT courses that I like to play and when I got to Oxford turned the unit on and damn, without selecting a course to play, it immediately showed up on the screen.
There are quite a few features that come with it but as I am still not all that familiar with it I used it in a pretty straight ahead mode with the exception being that I would mark the ball at the tee box and then mark it again when I got to my drive to see how far it went.
All in all, it could not have been easier nor more user friendly.

The one thing that I and my playing partners liked was that I could walk by their balls and give them an instant yardage # to the pin, no need to press a button, the # was there.
I only found one discrepancy from what the yardage marker said and the # that was on the screen (about 15 yards). I double checked a couple subsequent fairway markers and they were right on the button.

Addressing pace of play using a device like this I would have to say that it did not slow down our movement at all. The numbers show up on the screen immediately and there was no waiting.

My final thought is that if you are thinking about buying a unit like this – pull the trigger. This did everything I could ask for, including automatically moving and detecting exactly the tee we were going to without me doing a thing.

How much did you adjust the lie on your irons?

Glad to hear you're out and playing again, hopefully next week here!
