It is what it is.......

« on: March 11, 2010, 12:36:02 PM »

Well...I'm finally here.

Camp Taji, Iraq.  Living is not so bad.  The LDA has sanctioned a Long Drive Competition open to all of Iraq (military) and it is being held at the driving range here, at Camp Taji, next month.  See the attached file.

The winner gets 10,000.00 and will compete in the finals at Mesquite, NV.  Pretty cool.  No....I'm not entering...I haven't hit a ball since November.  However...I will go watch.  You never know who might show up and you never know what kind of freebies will be given away.

Camp Taji actually has a driving range.  Not too bad.  It's all dirt/sand...but we have some hitting mats.  My wife is sending my Hogan 4 iron and 8 iron and one of my best friends who is the Teaching Pro, at my local course back in TN, will be sending me a box of range balls.  We have to pick up our own range balls after we hit them.

The connectivity sucks here, depending on the time of the day.  I can't access GD from my office because the "Big Brother Army" block website like this from our work computers.  So...I can only log on from my personal room....and...like I said....the bandwidth is a "weak sister."

mainuh....thanks for the Happy B'Day email.  I really appreciate it.  Helps me to still feel connected to the States.

I'll check in when I can.

I miss my daily GD "fix"

I agree! What have you got to lose? It'll give you plenty to talk/write about. If you do enter, keep us posted. Be safe, brother.

Do you have an address where we can send a flat rate USPS priority mail box?

If so, I will fill one with golf balls for you and others to use on the range in Iraq.

Thanks for your service.

Dog gone it.  I was in country this time last year, and I know I could have gotten some RW lift to get me into Taji.  I think I could have been competitive, but what the heck.  I will most likely miss this qualifier as I might not be in the area.

Thanks guys....I appreciate the thoughts.  There are a few of us here and the range balls will be much appreciated.  The address is:

Sorry that I haven't been on the site for a few days.  Like I said....weak sister bandwidth.

Talked to my family on the Web Cam yesterday.  My 13 year old, Colton, was beaming and grinning from ear to ear.  Colt played in his second competitive round last week, for his Middle School golf team.  Their matches are only 9 holes.  He shot a 37!!!!!!  And that was on the tougher of the two nines.  They played the toughest golf school in the city....and won for the first time ever.  Colt's score was the lowest score between both teams.  I've only shot a 37 once out there.

This match was at my home course and one of my best friends is the teaching Pro out there - Ray Pearce.  Ray emailed me and confirmed that Colt wasn't exagerating.  He shot a 37.

I'm a dead man when I get home.

I'm going to threadjack my own thread.....I can't get online that much.  I just saw the new Ping Anser forged irons.  They have been released in Japan and expect to get released in the States this coming fall.  Are their any other threads on these?  Have any of you guys seen, heard, or read anything about them.  I'm jonesing hard!!!!!  This could be my present to myself, when I get home.  My wife will be at her weakest point then.  I have to be strategic about this.

The course on base is usually a PING account holder.  The PX is a joke when it comes to clubs.  The PX at Bragg still has an R7 Quad for $399.

Well...I finally got to hit on the range for the first time yesterday  My wife sent my Hogan 8 iron and 4 iron and I hit those for a while off of a mat.

There's a stack of "beater" clubs sitting out there....I mean hundreds of old, used clubs.  I grabbed a Nicklaus 3 wood and I could not even tell what kind of shaft was in it.  It was scratched up pretty bad.  Anyway.....after I was loosened up I hit that 3 wood.  It had a little draw on it (which is unusual for me).  I hit it well and when it hit the ground....it was like the Energizer Bunny - going and going and going....  This range is nothing but hard packed sand and when the ball hits...it just keeps on rolling.

I might change my mind and enter the competition.  I get 6 balls.  I just need to get hold of one of them.  Of course...the same applies to everybody entering and I don't have a clue what the competition would be like.....I'm sure somebody would be longer than me.

Jody, congratulations to your son!  That is fantastic play!

I will be sending you a flat rate USPS box with some new "range" balls.

I am also going to talk to my friend who works at Golfdom about sponsoring a golf Care Package for you and your guys.

Thanks for your service!

No...thank you for supporting us and just simply recognizing the job that we do.....not to mention the simple communication that I get from you guys on this board.  Trust me.....we all take a lot of things for granted....and I did not really understand how important something as simple as communication is.  It is really a stress reliever to be able to log on to GD and just read everybody's thoughts about the game that we all love.  I am not able to log on daily (like back in the states) and it means a lot more.

O.K.....the gay moment is now over.

Please...I know that some of you guys have mentioned sending range balls......I actually picked up probably 100 balls that were just left out on the range last week.  I did not know that there would be that many out there.  So....I will take anything that you send with much appreciation....but please don't feel pressured to do so.
