....talk me out of it.

The specific brand I'm looking at is Trek 7200+.  The cost is gonna be around $2,300 for the bike but then they'll be extras like chargers, etc.  The why is quasi exercise so I can commute a couple days a week to work (~10 miles each way).  It also ain't bad for the environment.

Any reasons I shouldn't do this??

WHy not just get a peddle bike and get something out of it exercise wise?

After two weeks, a commute will be super easy and you'll want to challenge yourself.

I used to ride X Country for years and even raced a little. Riding to work was a joke.

I'd just get a quality bike without the electrict assist and save yourself over a grand.  Maybe a good used one?  You mentioned exercise, so no need for quasi-moped.

I saw one of these electric bikes on the street in northern Virginia last fall:

http://www.epluselectricbike.com/

The guy riding it was out of the saddle and pedaling hard, and he was going impressively fast up hill.

I think the downside would be the expense, but I know nothing about biking.

Get an adult-sized carrier to be pulled behind an old Schwinn 10 speed. With the money left over, I'm sure you can hire someone to pedal you to work in this economy.  big_giggle

I have a high end bike.  9.5 miles first thing in the morning isn't the deterrent.  But there are enough hills that when I do it, I walk into the office sopping wet.  We have a shower but then that requires a shower and change of clothes.  That's still not a major problem.  It's the 9.5 miles home at the end of the day that are the most daunting.

For those that haven't ridden an electric assist bike, they're awesome.  At least the Trek one is.  Some have a throttle, with the Trek there is no free ride.  It helps when you pedal.  It's like going from persimmion to some super high end driver.  The power is fun.  Pedal, whoosh, pedal, whoosh.  The bike frame is reinforced to accommodate the motor so it feels super sturdy and balanced despite the extra weight.

It's one of those things where I know next year I could buy the thing for half the price.  Oh well, you only live once.   ablow

It's the 9.5 miles home at the end of the day that are the most daunting.

Tell me about it.
Years ago when I lived in Camden, Maine I rode my bike every day to Rockport, a few miles away with more than a few knuckle whitening hills.

The best part of the ride home was stopping at the Camden Harbor Inn for a draft of Sam Smith's  laugh
