I'm Going Off The Rails On A Crazy Train...

« on: March 03, 2010, 08:58:38 AM »

A few years back while scouring through an antiques shop I came across a near mint set of Hogan ApexII / Cameo irons. Prettiest damn things that I had ever seen.
Dope that I can sometimes be, I never pulled the trigger on them even after revisiting the shop and seeing them months later.
This picture does not do them justice - great looking set of irons.

So...if you could have just one set of classic forged irons, which would they be ?
Make it good because you'll never have another.

I have that set. I play it from time to time. It is a great set of clubs. The PW is a bit ugly though.

Don't have a pic to post, but a minty set of Muirfield 20ths would do me just fine.

I had a chance to buy a set about 7 years ago, for $69, and didn't bite.  I still think about them...

A 1977 set of Powerbilt Citations. Played them for nearly 20 years and still have them. A great club.

I've got TWO sets of Maxfli Australian Blades, circa 1983. Both still in the box, with heads still in the original plastic. Original green GolfRite grips still tacky. UPS shipping label is dated March 15th, 1983.... One set R flex, other set S flex, 3-PW. Never struck a ball.....

And a set of Spaulding TopFlite Blades, same year, same condition.

Tough to choose between 1960 Dyna-Powereds or 1967 VIPs, but I will have to go with the VIPs, just cuz I live and breathe MacGregor!!

Those clubs look fantastic!
Rory McIlroy's coach, Michael Bannon, gave me his old MacGregor 1982 pro classic irons.
Heads are so small compared to my Mizuno's. Can't wait till the new year to hit (shank) them.

Fun thread.

Back when I played for a living-ish   shocking

I played those same Hogan irons.. still have them and a backup set ( for no apparent reason ) , but also won an event with the Wilson FG-17 irons

Oddly... Dunlop Australian Blades were also classy in my opinion.

Mike, I'm currently reading a book - Arnie and Jack. It mentions that Palmer was playing a set of Hogans in a tournament that he beat the Wee Ice Man with and later came to rue a contract he had with Wilson.

As to Dunlop and I'm sure you've heard the story - Gary Player was having trouble with his swing.
He called Hogan to see if Ben might be able to offer some advice.
The conversation went something like this -
Hogan - If I might be so curt, what clubs do you play ?
Player - Dunlop
Hogan - Then I suggest you call Mr. Dunlop.  laugh

Your mention of the Dunlop Aussies is one that I have read numerous times as one of the most classic of iron designs.
Feel Golf has done a pretty good job of replicating the design, though their yellow is a bit over the top.

Those are great stories. Legendary actually. Something that makes this game spectacular.

Hogan and Jones are my personal favorites.

FEEL Golf , with the colors, is surely different. I don't know what to say about that.

Happy New Year my friend

Happy New Year as well.

Interesting read my new book - I don't know the state of Palmers current thoughts about Hogan, but if they are the same as at the time of publishing (2008) he pretty much loathes Hogan.

FEEL Golf , with the c o l o r s, is surely different. I don't know what to say about that...

Yeah.... there is one company out there that truly believes that line of crap.

Like they say..... "Beauty fades, stupidy is forever".

I will stick with quality and playability... let others sell the sizzle.
