I'm Going Off The Rails On A Crazy Train...

« on: March 11, 2010, 10:11:03 AM »

If you have HBO and are an old school hoops fan you owe it to yourself to watch the HBO special -
Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals: Synopsis

Magics an interesting guy but Bird...definately some demons rattling around his head.

We were debating gamesmanship in another thread - Seve and Tiger are pale in comparison to Bird.

Growing up in LA and being 12 when the Lakers drafted Magic, I was of course a huge fan and still am.  I had no idea that the NBA was in such bad shape and that there was so much racial tension between the players and the fans...

I remember seeing that Converse commercial and being totally shocked after all the tough games they played against each other....Highly entertaining special and it's worth it just to see Bryant Gumble say Bullsh**....

Got it on the DVR - outstanding insight...I could've watched five hours of that.  Bird is what the Stones sang about in "Salt of the Earth" - as succinct (not simple) as they come.  Hard as a rock and stubborn as a mule.  I can see the demons you speak of due, I'm sure in no small part, to his dad's suicide and his poor rural upbringing.

You still gotta wonder how Erv got the HIV, though - you have to be doing some seriously rough barebackin' to get it as a straight guy... dntknw

It's not hard for straight guys to get HIV...use your imagination and you can probably come up with a scenario...

Or maybe he never had it and it was misdiagnosed, because they can't find it in his body now....

_Extremely_ rare for "pitchers" to contract it, and I don't think he was an intravenous drug user.

It was not misdiagnosed.  When someone is diagnosed with HIV, there are second, third and sometimes more, tests to confirm the diagnosis and ongoing maintenance testing.  Just Google Magic Johnson + HIV and there are plenty of articles on his status, his work in the field of HIV education and research.  He's HIV positive, it's just at very low levels I suppose.

Really?  If you're putting your d!ck into the wrong holes, blood vessels are broken, then don't the HIV get ya no matter whether you're "pitching" or "catching".

I only ask because I know this topic is of great importance for Rockford.   prop

The overwhelming odds are that if he was just a pitcher (and I'm not saying he wasn't), it would have to be multiple exposures with an infected partner or partners.  I guess it happens, but from what I gather, it's very rare.  Also, just because you have unprotected sex with someone doesn't mean you will become infected...thus his wife and (then) unborn child being HIV neg.

you treat pitchers and catchers different with anti virals. the catcher takes one or two more compared to the pitcher. Magic most likely has a virus that isn't very virulent. And he is a celebrity that has access to the best virologist and infectious disease doc's that money can buy

That's a good point - and catching it in it's very early stages didn't hurt, either.  Talking to an HIV drug rep in the Dallas Ft. Worth airport one time, the guy told me that more or less HIV is synonymous these days with diabetes or lupus, or any other number of chronic, incurable diseases in that with maintenance, diet and exercise, people can live a long time with it...though with the obvious stigma attached.  He had been doing this so long he told me he "could spot people with the virus" in the terminal by the muscular lipodystrophy; the gathering of fat on the face and at the waistline in a pear-shaped mass.  He pointed out three or four people that when I saw them, I could tell there was something odd physically.  It was kind of spooky, I must say.

Imagine a guy pointing out the "walking dead" in an airport terminal, if you will.  THAT was muffed up, bro.
