I play a set of 1983 Hogan Radials.  I've tried the newer "game improvement" irons but have never found anything easier to hit that goes farther, higher, or straighter.

These clubs have lofts a full club weaker than modern ones, yet go as far.

I play a set of Honma 737 blades and they play extremely well for me...very difficult to get sloppy on these irons..You really have to focus all the time..very solid..anybody here use the honma.. winkey

You wont find too many using those, but they are fine clubs.

Robby my honmas are 1/2 inch shorter but the distance doesn't seem affected by the 1/2 inch..you think i should keep them that way or extend the shaft..maybe i can get more distance?

I dont think you will notice any distance increase. You will gain less that 1mph and you will lose some center contact so it will equal out.

My classic set up is nearly complete.

Ram Staff tour leather bag (white and red, 20 years old)

Ram Tour Axial persimmon woods, 1,3, 5

Ram tour grind blades 1 thru to 9

Ram Tom Watson scoring system wedges (Cobalt and BeCu)

All I need is a Zebra or Wizard putter then I'll post photos.

Totally old skool and flash as f*** on the course!

I just picked up a sweet set (10 clubs) of Bridgestone Tourstage NB-32 cavity/blades that are about 6 years old.  They have a very compact head and really not much of a cavity.  Very blade like.  I'm send them off to be refinished in a satin chrome from Quality Golf in SoCal.  These are very rare (like my TM Firesole Forged) and were only sold in Japan.  They were forged by Endo, who makes some of the finest forgings in the world.  They won't be my everyday set, but I love looking at them and they feel superb!

I'm new to GD, but I've been around some other golf forums for many years.  A few of the folks here will prolly remember me.
As for classic clubs, I have a shop full of them....  Toney Penna persimmon woods, Ram tour grind blades (including a sweet set of TW282 square toes), Founders 200 series, Apex redlines, Mizuno TP-19s and MS-203s, and Merit Tour Internationals.  I'm still playing classic lofts on my RAC MBs - 49 PW down to 24 3i.
I have a lot of vintage metal woods as well - TM pittsburgh persimmon and Founders fresh metals.

Neat stuff.....

I've been playing staff tour blades fg-17 for 25 yrs. The grooves are  non existant on the short irons and some chrome has come off on a few irons.  I decided to have them totally rebuilt including stronger lofts, regroved, rechromed w/tour chrome, new tour flighted rifle shafts, and cord grips.  My golfing buddies make fun of my clubs and tell me I should update to a "modern set."  After they pay up after the round all I have to say is how can you improve on perfection. I will go to the grave with these clubs.

I have been playing with my 1983 Apex PC's and a set of '88 Apex Redlines over the past month. Had almost forgotten how great they were.

Those things had the smallest sweetspot but were really sweet. I played with the redlines for a while and they were butter when hit well, but omg if you missed a shot in cold weather you needed wrist surgery.

Once a year some buddies and I get together for a "Classics" tourney.  We break out all the old gear and play a three round tourney.  The winner gets presented with a really ugly old brown jacket (spin off of the green jacket at the Masters) and a trophy.

When I refer to classics, I'm talking about bringing out my old Wilson Staff blades, Titleist Professional balls and yes even the old persimmon woods.  It's a blast.  Sure makes you realize how far technology has come along.

I play an old Titleist Tour Model Putter.  Best Putter I have ever had.  I love the look and the feel is great!

Got a Tour Model Heel Shafted Offset. Best feel ever, far better than a Cameron Napa. Still got the original shaft, replaced the grip with a Golf Pride Leather. Can only use it when my putting is on (rarely), the rest of the time I use a 2-ball.

I don't play them now, but I played a set of Palmer "the Standard" blades from 82-95.  I have kept them, and did pull them out of the garage a couple of years ago and played them for about 6 weeks.  Great clubs, but the sweetspot is about 1/2 the size of a dime.......   shocking  It's good to take them to the range now and then to remind yourself how easy modern clubs, even ones that are not game improvement ones,  are to hit.

I play my '71-'72 Apex Round Sole 2i.  Love it.  Can hit 220-230 off the deck and gotten 240-250 off tee box.
I've got my 976D 8* as my back up driver and Hogan 3-9 Round Sole and Spalding XL4 as my back up irons.  Then my 3wd I just moved to back up is a 1996 (1st Gen) Cally Big Bertha, even says S2H2 on it.

I keep a set of MP29's that I've had for a while. They are shot, rusted, dinged, probably 5.0/10. I bought them cheap, they came with no shaft labels, so I have no clue what type of shaft is in there. They feel amazing, I love the reverse offset on the short irons, but my recent lack of playing/practice time keeps them in the shed, only to come out twice a year...

« Reply #49 on: December 03, 2006, 07:10:55 AM »

I have a set of FG-17's that i got in great shape minus the 6 iron (Sweet Spot wear) condition that i am wanting to get refinished someday in a Satin with Red paintfill, but i have to find a good refinisher.  Too many horror stories i have read about places.

I played 1 round with them, they are beautiful.  I cant play with them all the time though...too pretty to hit, so they stay in the corner.  But thats better than banishing them to the closet where my putters go when they are bad!  hunter
