Decifering MacGregor EOM M85W registration codes

Is there a member of Golf Discussion who can decifer registration codes on older MacGregor Tourney Eye-O-Matic M85W Persimmon woods?
 I have attached a close-up of the hosel with the registration numbers/letters.  Please contact me if you can provide any help at all!

Blair - I am curious as to the purpose of your query. Now I know that registration #'s are very important when establishing the value of guitars ( Gibson Les Paul, Fender Strat's...) but can't figure a reason why it would be important for your MacGregor.

I don't have my Maltby Collectables book at my fingertips, is this a particularly rare issue ?

Parish at The Golf Gallery on  2887 Bloor Str.West, Etobicoke ON MX81BS might be able to decipher the numbers. He did a fair bit of restoration on Persimmons years ago.  416 232-1774

The "C" stands for a factory stiff shaft but that is all I know.  The rest is probably model, production run and date.

Blair, you old goat, you're trying to decipher the wrong numbers!


The A certain it stands for Armour, the 2 might be loft, C could be shaft flex

Revision -after some thought based on the markings on VFQ irons of that period.
2A is the shaft flex in this case regular(1A was stiff),  C is for the type of shaft, Pro-pell shaft was the factory shaft for MacGregor that time.
9 is the loft 
62 is the year

IIRC, the first number is the swingweight.

2 = D2. 

I will try to dig up the reference in the macgregor catalog.

What year do you think this wood you have pictured is?  The serial number looks strange.

The 1952 Mens R/H M/T M85's  had a 5 screw "cross" pattern helping hold the face insert in place and a Crown "Stamp" winged MT logo.

The 1953 - 55 Mens R/H M/T M85's also had a Crown Stamp winged MT logo BUT had  6 screw "box" pattern helping to hold the face insert in place. The 1956 Mens R/H M/T M85's had a "decal" on the crown rather than a stamp.

The "6 screw box pattern on the face insert and the winged MT stamp" lead me to beleive that my set(4) of Mens R/H M/T M85W's were manufactured sometime between 1953-55(inclusive)  

My reference is  Golfworks Maltby Golf Club Identification & Price Guide 4th Edition -
pages 28-61 to 28-72.

Post Script - I am new to Persimmon wood club 3R's and am interested in hearing from others. What is your opinion on the registration numbers pictures I have posted?

The 2 denotes a D-2 Swingweight

The next letter plus the 4-digit number following indicates the individual recording number.

For 1952, the last letter "C" for 1952 denotes the "C(TTW)" shaft, a firm medium-stiff pattern... likely the same for the 1953 version you have there.

Here is the description from the MacGregor Catalog for 1953:

"The deep 69 Model driver with the easy playing 40 Model fairway woods make the perfect combination for better golf performance.  Hand selected persimmon heads are finished in a rich dark mahogany glaze with exclusive Eye-O-Matic face, white with black insert.  True Temper C chrome shaft, a firm medium-stiff pattern. [M85W had a beveled edge red leather grip] Individually recorded."
