When I lived in Phoenix my buddy and I went out to Karsten and did the same thing.  It took a couple tries but it surprisingly easy to do, but man what an imagination.  The impressive part is that he thought of it, that shot would have never occurred to me.  I have yet to have an opportunity during a round to use it and doubt I ever will.

I tried this and was able to get it go back / sideways but not as nice as Phil.  My practice bunker isn't setup as well for this shot as the one he is using.
