Now, that's simple ignorance.  They could have played better yet in their long illustrious careers they never did.  Hmmm...

Uhhmmm...actually he did.  Read the final box score, no hits, no runs, no errors.

Did he ever do it when he was 100%?  Nope.  As I said, you'll be hard pressed to find a better game from MJ in the finals than the "flu game".

Surely not.  As I said previously, "Bottom line: you can't predict performance."

Simply ignorance or too much prudish brain washing going on?  Golf and alcohol went hand-in-hand back in the day.  I'm sure players such as Trevino, Palmer and the like-kind never brandished a drink the night before a big round.  Perish the thought, oh my.  Recreational drugs use to be all the rage in the '70's.  Now it's performance enhancing ones.   winkey

Lots of antedotal evidence of players sipping a tall one to calm the nerves.

Later,
David

Was that MJs best game of his entire career?  Was it the best game by any NBA player ever?  Did David Wells throw 27 pitches in that game?

If those were the best games then why didn't they drink before every game?

Just because it was done back in the day doesn't make it a good idea.  Doctors used to do commercials for cigarettes.  You probably think that enhances performance too...   Roll Eyes

I think it is ignorance on your part, plain and simple, or you are trying to justify a drinking problem.

While it may be true for an average hack to find some refuge or solace in getting a little buzzed prior to the round and that buzz may in fact calm his nerves a professional athlete planning on playing at the highest level would realize little or no advantage to using alcohol prior to performing.
Alcohol is not a performance enhancing drug it is a sedative.  However I did personally know a PGA tour player that would burn one before every round as he claimed if he didn't he couldn't putt.  Fortunately he no longer plays regularly on tour, but if they ever random tested in an event he happened to be playing in then he would be screwed.  I do know a couple guys,  good players, that actually play better while drunk not just buzzed but actually drunk.  But they are not Tiger Woods sober or drunk and I am certain that if Tiger got himself drunk prior to a round he would perform below his own expectations.

For me and my back issues, alcohol seems to help loosen it up some.  I am not saying getting smashed, but a beer or 2 before or during helps loosen my back.  Could be that whole sedative thing.  From my college degree I know the effects of alcohol and the reasons for it.  I don't get hammered the night befor or anything, I have tried to play with a hangover, not as much fun.  But it also depends on the time of day.  Late morning or later I will drink, when I play at 7 a.m. Sunday mornings, I don't drink.  Sometimes my friends and I go just to drink big_giggle.  But this is just weekend warrior stuff and when we get a good buzz on we don't complane about our scores .  I definately aint going to say being hammered ever helped my score.

It was MJ's best game when the games counted most.  Did Wells throw 27 pitches, no?  But that wasn't his intent.  It was to allow no runs, no hits and no walks.  I don't know how you measure "performance" but it don't get no better than that.   winkey

If those were the best games then why didn't they drink before every game?

I'm pretty sure Wells did.   big_giggle  Or maybe you're missing the no correlation part.

Golf ain't the most physical of sports.  It's mostly mental.  I see lots of hacks who claim alcohol helps there game.  Some of them I even agree with.   prop  Anything that clams the mind and soothes the nerves is generally not going to be a bad thing in golf.  Alcohol can do this.  I'm not talking falling down drunk or where one loses coordination, just enough to soothe the mind.  Being really smart (active mind) and being a good golfer is really hard.  I believe that is why I suck at golf.   whist big_giggle

I think it is ignorance on your part, plain and simple, or you are trying to justify a drinking problem.

I'm the 2nd person in this thread you've accused of having an alcohol problem.  Me thinks thou dost protest too much!  Are you a recovering alcoholic or just a real teetotaler?

Soooo....let's play the "profile game" with Billy Baroo.   yahoo

I'm guessing you're not a recovering alcoholic or had someone close to you that was/is an alcoholic.  Given the moral superiority attitude, I'm guessing you're a teetotaler.  As such, I'm getting a feeling you don't eat red meat since that's so ickey and bad for one's digestive tract and all.  I wouldn't go so far as to say you're a vegatarian but maybe one of those pescatarian hypocrits???  If so, I bet you often wear sandals (most likely Merrells), are concerned about your carbon footprint, don't follow most major sports, you're not good at math, are a born-again Christian, and didn't have sex with your wife until you were married!!

Oh please, please, please tell me if I was close.   popcorn

Well, I guess you've made your mind up but it's a social thing round here, it can bring enjoyment and relaxation but people always polarize it to, you don't drink or you are alcoholic. There is a bigger window than that and if you don't like it thats fine. We probably could exist without it but then why do people but a Mini rather than a VW Golf. The Golf has the up to date chassis, engine and safety features the mini as at the old version. Each to their own  whist

If you're white and going dancing, alcohol is a necessity!  It'll improve your performance, trust me.   prop

If that post isn't made in jest I suggest some counseling for an alcohol problem.
Although he is a youthful knucklehead, he doesnt have any alcohol problem.  Ekcoupe rarely drinks and when he does he is one and done.

Well said? He started by saying top pro's wouldn't concider gaining an advantage with a quick drink, then went on to say he new one who did. Which side are you agreeing with?
Alcohol can be performance enhancing as it will ease stress and free up the player to play more relaxed. We are not talking hammered but a measure or two, it acts as a relaxant.
I also know a former tour player who had one to calm his nerves and if they checked his Gatorade in his bag he would not be made welcome again!

A performance enhancer, are you kidding me?  You might as well pop some Valium instead, at least you avoid those empty calories in the alcohol.   Roll Eyes

No kidding it is, but you don't want to listen. It might even give a placebo effect but if you want to pop pills and say that is OK, carry on. We are not ramming it down your throat (no pun intended) that you HAVE to drink and it is good for you, but you still continue to preach it's pure evil. Try a little balance in your view  cheesyf

Alcohol is far from pure evil, (See: http://www.golfdiscussions.com/yabbse/index.php/topic,33085.0.html) I enjoy it on a regular basis, but know for any sort of event that requires one to be on their game mentally or physically it is not going to help.
