Couple weeks ago, I met a guy for a round of golf so after our 10th hole, he offered to play 4 of us for $50 each if he'll play his ball against our worst score. Needless to say, we won. So earlier this week, he offered to play each of us, his score against our worst score for $100 each. Every one of us took the bet within a second even though he wants to play from white tees(6000 yds) while we play from blue tees(6850 yds long but no roll).

Anyone ever come across such a guy that's got money to burn?

Anyway, on a par 5 3rd hole, 577 yard long into stiff wind, I had to make the best double bogey in my life after hitting my tee shot in water, then my 4th shot into native grass that I had to hack out then hit a 6 iron into bunker that plugged underneath the lip to a tight pin with about 15 feet of break right straight downhill looking at making 9 or 10, so I holed out from there for a 7 which is I'm absolutely thrilled with. He pressed twice and we took care of him easily for 3 matches our way. He's about 20-25 handicap and he was playing against us that's +2.2, +1.6(me) and 0 handicap players. He shot a 98 while we shot worst ball 82 with 2 worst ball birdies thrown in. Hehe.

So would anyone of you play this kind of game against this kind of player? You have to know 3 of us, rarely makes any kind of big score so we have advantage even though I almost made a huge score on a hole. What pissed me off is that I hit a nice tee shot on a 177 yds par 3 to 6-9 inches from the hole and my 2 partners made their putts from outside 30 feet for birdies to rob me of a skin. Shait!

But it was lotta fun though collecting few Franklins!!!! It sure helped defray the Christmas expenses!!!

If I were you I would have taken the bet for sure.  It's not like you were hustling the guy.  He had seen you play and you had seen him play, at that point if he's willing to make the wager then why not?  Make yourself a little extra money!

One of the best ways I know to get better at any "gaming" sport such as golf can be is to play for money against people who are a little better than I am.  I will either get better or get my wallet.

Quite true but this guy is about 20-30 shots worse than any of us though. I don't know why he would want to play us this way, oh well.

Was this moron named Todd?   big_giggle

Am I reading this right?  $100 per man, per hole, i.e. he basically paid $300 per hole x 18 holes???   yahoo

Some guys just need the $$$ aspect to make the game entertaining. I play regularily with guys that MUST be playing a side game in order to make the day complete. I've taken my share of the pots, but also taken a beating at the same time. At the end of the summer, it evens itself out.

We do long drive for drinks. I've yet to pay for one since we started doing it. Luck, obviously.  winkey

I've played lots of guys with more money than brains or skill, just not quite to that degree. Over one beautiful summer I played pretty much for free because I played the same fish almost every time out. I cried when he moved.  sad boy

I played three rich suckers once and cleaned house. It was $10 a hole each, no strokes, and if tie the purse doubles (30-60-120-240...). There best golfer was about a fifteen handicapp. I showed up in baggy jean shorts, skate shoes and some offensive tee-shirt with a fifty one fifty hat backwards. I got paid, and then they invited me to play again the next day. It was almost $3k in two days.

Next time I would meet the guy before the round and get him sloshed and convince him it is a great golfer, but there is no way he can beat you. Appeal to his senses and you will win ever more money! Whats with the 82 though?

Seems to me like the guy might be a degenerate gambler, and while I'm not necessarily opposed to taking a moron's money, I wonder if this is affecting his personal life? Also, I'd be afraid of what Dr. Green's describing, which is the ultimate sucker play. (Maybe he offers you guys $200 a hole and suddenly he's the scratch golfer?)

If you guys are all scratch and plus handicaps how did you shoot a worst score 82 from the white tees?

We played from blue tees and the wind was quite brisk but not strong, maybe around 15 mph. He played from whites. One guy in my group did not play very well, had 3-4 bad holes while i had one that I was lucky to escape with a double. Scores were 69, 74(me) and 77 or 78 for 3rd guy.

82 is our worst combined score counting each hole where our worst score counts for that hole, several bogies along with 4-5 double bogeys. Two holes, we actually counted birdie as our worst score as we all 3 birdied the same hole. For example, on a hole, one guy holed out 3 iron for an eagle(he really did from 205 out), I parred while 3rd guy made double bogey so we counted that double bogey as our score on that hole.

What I mean is that we couldn't believe that this guy wanted to do that against us as it's a no brainer. Now if it's against 10-15 handicapper, we probably won't do it for that much.

I never met him in my life until about 2 weeks or so ago when a friend brought him here for a round. We couldn't believe that he offered to play us for this kind of bet. He didn't really care when he forked over Franklins. Normally, our usual bet is $2 per match with several other bets thrown in. Nothing big just have little fun going on.

I wonder about what he's like in his personal life and if he likes to spend the money like it's just pennies to him, I have no clue what he does but he owns some kind of business. He actually played better this time than 1st time I played with him.

I rarely have played for money. One time I played a guy that an old buddy of mine knew. He was a construction worker and showed up in dirty jeans and a heavy metal t-shirt, and his clubs were pretty much a garage sale pickup.
We played for $10 a side (yeah, I know, big spender.) He won the front by a couple strokes and I won the back on the last hole by a stroke. It was pretty fun, and it was the best score I had ever shot on that course (I think it was a 77 or 78.) At one point, the guy hit his ball into some weeds and couldn't find it. He had to borrow a ball from his buddy. He had one ball in his bag!  laugh I won that day, but barely. Never know who can play or what they'll look like.  zchange

I think the guy might just like playing with better golfers who normally wouldn't play with him if he wasn't dumping cash to them.
