Let The Nothingness Into Yer Shots

« on: September 07, 2008, 10:24:03 AM »

I did this a few weeks ago, and now I'm thinking it should be a permanent thread for yard sale discoveries. I'll get us going: yesterday, I got two Spalding Persimmon Fairway Woods (a 2 1/2 and a 3) and a MacGregor 4 Wood. Their condition was good to great, especially the MacGregor which might not have been hit before. Pictures below.

Because I love them. There's nothing more beautiful in golf than a persimmon club. Besides, they're usable too. I like gaming them every once in a while.

Although there aren't many yard sales in my area---I like the cut of your jib.  Great thread, great finds and keep 'em coming.

Great finds! The Spalding is cool. This is such an anal observation, but the last owner must have had the club refinished and put the face screws back in the wrong holes.  I guess it's my first clue I may have an unhealthy obsession with old golf clubs  laugh

the Spaulding #2 has a fiber insert and the other has a poured insert...which is a much newer model.

The reason they are painted black is to cover the imperfections in the grain.

The MacGregor #4 looks to be a part of a complete 4/9 set as since no other markings on the sole.. probably 95% chance of this.

That's strange to call Persimmons crap. That Mac is beautiful !! I'll have to save this thread because I may decide I want to make a deal on that one.

Still a great president. However, that's not what we're discussing.

My wife (!!!) doesn't mind me hitting the yard sales, compared to what I could be getting into.

Never even knew of a 2 1/2 wood.  Have you done any research into that set, for example, did they make other half woods as well?  Is it also perhaps valuable?

I with you, whether purchased to play or jjust to sit around, I think the old clubs are neat.  Plus it generally puts to rest any of the so-called new ideas from OEM's

I don't know any history, but presumably it was nothing more than an attention grabbing gimmick. I also have a Hogan six wood in really good shape. That's an amusing club.
