I've been looking at a lot of shafts specs lately, trying to get a handle on how vendors rate their shafts based on swing speed.

Still confused.

I am using a set of Ping G2 irons regular shaft (purchased without a fitting).

With an iron swing speed of 65 mph, should I be using a senior flex?

I have never hit these irons that great.

Would a softer flex help improve ball striking?

thanks...alan

It depends on your transition, release, and the actual profile of the shaft you're thinking of.  Swing speed is only 1 of a few factors in shaft fitting.

good questioon and webb states a good point.     i think you also answred it -    you say your hitting them great.     softer flex can -  allow for a higher ball flight, more distance - cause there is more whip..    etc..

First off I'd like to suggest you go to to Ping fitting center and have them evaluate your swing and adjust the lie of the irons. It's free and they will assess wether or not your swing-speed is too slow for the regular shaft you have. A strong transition would impose different demands but again that is something for a careful eye to discern. Ping will make the right shaft recommendations to you at any rate. If you decide to have them do the re-shafting it will cost a little more than a regular fitter but at least you will retain the factory warranty and any further adjustment will be included and free from there on in.

With a 65 MPH Swing Speed, I feel you're a solid candidate for a Senior Flex (3.5-4.0 Rifle Scale) shaft.  At that speed, regardless of what your transition or release is, nothing is going on at too high of a swing speed to have other determining factors affect the choice of flex ...

its impossible to say that you need either and x or r or s, these are not the same thing from manufacturer to manufactruer and specific shaft to specific shaft, also even when comparing two shafts that are supposedly identical they will not be, you need to get professionally fitted.

saying 65mph equals a certain flex is not taking advantage of the fitting technology that is available.

i like my drivers for example to have a swing weight of d4 and cpm of 251.  is that xx flex or r flex?  i dont know but i know that is what is hit best.

I can build you 10 drivers that are D4 and frequency at 251 and still have every one play completely different. Hell I can build you a driver that weighs 5 lbs and swing weight at D4 and freq at 251. Still think you will hit it best? Butt frequency and swing weight are not what I consider great fitting parameters.
