Personally I would not use one unless we are having a backyard BB-Q and a putting contest.  From what I have seen, they don't roll very true and might mess up an otherwise good putting stroke.  They are pretty expensive as well.  Around here, they run $15-25 s.f..  To me, I would rater drive to the golf course and putt or a little bit than have the big expense up front and not use it very often.

If you don't get the cilica sand-filled green, what other type would you get?  If you are thinking about felt on concrete.... don't.  They mold very badly.

I went to a class to learn how to install putting greens.  I was not impressed and do not recoment them to people other than those that really want to practice their putting stroke on short putts.

i think it sounds like a great idea.  I know personally I'd use it all the time, and it's the most important part of the game to practice.
looks like a pretty sweet setup you've got planned there.

There is company that uses recycled tires or something like that to make artificial grass (not turf from the 70 & 80's) and one of their options was putting green with zero maintenance.  I think it is part of the same company that does the new field turf the pro stadiums use.

I use to have some tif 419 in my last backyard.  I watered the heck out of it, fertilized it a ton and set my mower deck all the way down and drug it around the yard.  I don't think I could putt on it but it was great to chip and just lay in the yard.  Neighbors and family used to say that the grass in the yard was nicer than the carpet in the house.

After speaking with a few guys,I've decided to install a 4x4 area of tee line turf along with an area of longer stuff for chipping. The tee line stuff allows for the use of regular tees to be used for drivers and is more durable for withstanding of full swings.doing This will allow me to put my hitting net up and take full swings
I can build net to stand on walkway.

A great company called TruTurf installed a green outside of our performance studio.  It's pretty solid and rolls great.

There are some additional pictures here of the actual green they did for us:

chtw, is dead on when he says it is a good green. I watched some individuals hit chips onto the green and observed a putter fitting on this green during the Haggin Oaks Demo Days. Great quality green and it looked amazing too.

Looks interesting.I highly doubt they would come to arizona for a job.Viewed site, but they dont offer sample pics of the different types of grass (fake).I wonder who the actual maker of the synthetic grass is?

Cln, you can give Mike Schy over at Riverbend Golf Club a call.  He does work with TruTurf and would be able to tell you anything you could ever want to know about it.  He's a great guy and one of the most outstanding teachers around.

Home Depot actually has a really good product.  Rolls well and isn't all that expensive....

I'll be doing mine next Spring.

Good luck.
