There is still a lot of love and romance about some of the classic irons of yesteryear.
I thought it might be helpful for all the guys who are interested in classics, if we made a list of iron sets that are worthy of continued play, or at least are collectable,.
I'll start with sets that ,from my personal experience were particularly playable .

This set I reshafted are suprisingly smooth now that I put a set of S300 (softstepped) pulls in them along with prosoft inserts. Their weak lofts make the 3-PW set play like 4-GW.   |

My first set was '73 Staff's (half set) great clubs! I still have and a set of '58 Staff's 2-SW. My vote would be for the Golden Ram Tour Grind already mentioned  I got to play with afriend recently who plays MacGregor Murfields he had refinished with a copper face...they are gorgeous! Early 70's Wilson Staff irons

I bought a set of those Staffs in 1973 or 4. Brand new I paid $165 for them- a small fortune. Great clubs. Bought a set of woods- 1, 3 and 5 laminated Staffs for $135. Great woods. I couldn't hit those clubs today if I tried!

Does the Ping Eye2 fit as a classic? Certainly still worthy of play. I played once a set of beryllium(?) Eye2's and they were great.

Wow, those are all great clubs. Old Staffs- I drooled over them back in the day. I couldn't afford them, so I got Titleist Tour Model blades, which were essentially a copy for about $50-60 less, when $50 was a lot of money- at least to me! Man back in those days, I bought an "Acushnet" Bulls-Eye putter over a Ping I liked better, because the Bulls Eye was $18.00 and the Ping was an obscene $30.00! Can you believe that?
I had a full bag of the Muirfields. I still have the driver and the 3 wood. They are still beautiful.
Ping Eye2 I'd consider a classic. Beyond the classic moniker, they were a paradigm shift. Much like Taylor Made's metalwoods, they created an inflection point in golf and there was no going back after that.

According to the Maltby Guide (going from memory here, so bear with me), the models you have were also made in 1979, but the sole was a touch flatter than the later years; think it was 81 when they added a bit of camber. The Ram custom shop was VERY busy, so it's tough to really say for absolute certain with some models. I happen to have a model of Rams I've never seen described anywhere; they're Frequency Matched, the toe is squared more than any other Rams I've seen, stamped with "TW Custom Grind." I have a set of TW276 and have seen TW282, these look different yet. Such as I remember them, they might be similar to the 1980ish Watson Grinds. <shrug> Fun stuff, in any event. |

Thanks NR great info! I'll see if I can take some pics. of them and try to figure out how to post them. To try to describe, there seems to be some camber (a little), aren't old MacGregor flat especially in the trailing edge. "RAM" + no. or pitching wedge on sole. "Golden Ram" on the muscle. "Tour Grind" on toe. True Temper Dynamic (silver and black) shaft bands with a circled s on them. |

I sent my gamers off to be reshafted. In the meanwhile I pulled some Hogans out and have bagged them. I have played three rounds with them and I cannot say enough about these irons  ! I've actually considered playing them through the summer. It's a great feeling getting back to the basics. |

It's really sad, I had a chance to get a set of Watson Grinds (not the 276s or 282s) at 2nd Swing a few years ago for $50 and didn't do it. I still kick myself for that. |
