I try to make sure that I keep the club outside of my hands on my takeaway. I have a tendency to get a little inside coming back, and can never get the club back on plane coming down. I start hitting high pushes and big hooks. It also makes you get some width on your backswing. I think Sergio has the best backswing in golf, very wide.

I try to take the club straight back like you are supposed too, but on those days when im not swinging the greatest, i tend to bring it back outside and re-route at the top... and every once in a while the inside-out swing jumps out of my pocket and I hit that big ole nasty slice, never ceases to amaze me shocking

Went to an overlap grip &  think take away with left hand-left side.  Has worked wonders with irons but driver is still work in progress- regress to interlock comfort zone with driver & inside takeaway starts.  Also place tee 6-8 inches inline & to rt of ball and take away outside the tee, (for rh's).

I'm an option #2 guy- right arm/chest connection for the first 2-3 feet to keep the club outside of my hands.  Then I try to feel like I keep the cup in my wrist, and the butt of the club is pointed straight down at toes on the way up, all the way up.  This keeps my swing slightly steep, shorter, and wider.  In actuality, I have a very slight cup in my wrist (strong grip), and the shaft is pointed in between the ball and my toes.  But I need to feel like the clubshaft is vertical, or else I lay it off at the top and come too far from the inside on the way down.

That's my personal takeaway/backswing procedure.  I play my best when I do these things.
