Robin Lopez has game -- enough game to woo Michelle Wie
By MJD

Stanford's Robin Lopez is officially the most interesting guy in the NCAA tournament. I don't care if I learn tomorrow that Drew Lavender is actually the bastard lovechild of Ben Vereen and Condoleeza Rice, I still think Robin Lopez has him beat.

Not only do he and his brother -- his identical 7-foot twin -- have an obsession with Disney World, and not only are they both huge Michael Jackson fans, but Robin's also dating Michelle Wie.

From a recent Sports Illustrated article, via Sports by Brooks:

Robin is dating Stanford’s current most famous female coed, golf phenom Michelle Wie, although both have tried to keep things as quiet as possible.
Telling Sports Illustrated about it is an interesting strategy for keeping things quiet, but hey, what do I know about being a celebrity? I'm sure he has his reasons.

Robin Lopez is young, famous, gifted, in the Sweet Sixteen, and dating Michelle Wie, who is legal, loaded, and should Robin see this as a benefit, often far away from home.

How many people on the planet have a better life than Robin Lopez? Not many, friends.

So the gangly, alien-looking, too-tall Asian girl who used to have a golf swing is dating a 7'+ hispanic/mixed, too-thin, 1/2 of a freakishly-tall pair of twins basketball player who may have a future playing basketball in Europe if he doesn't get hurt.

Who knows, maybe he will sign an ungodly contract with a NBA team and then get hurt and never really get much playing time.

They might be perfect for each other.

Anyone that likes Michael Jackson is pretty scary based on that fact alone.

Wie receives sponsor exemption for Ohio tournament in July

SYLVANIA, Ohio -- Michelle Wie has accepted a sponsor exemption to play in the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic in suburban Toledo this summer.

Wie, a freshman at Stanford, first played in the tournament as a 13-year-old amateur in 2003.

The LPGA pro was sidelined with wrist problems that shortened her season last year. Two weeks ago, she received an exemption to play in the Safeway tournament but withdrew after injuring her left wrist. Wie has played in one tournament so far this year.

Se Ri Pak became the first LPGA player to win the same tournament six times when she captured the Farr title last summer. The tournament starts July 10.

Wie accepts exemption into State Farm

Michelle Wie has accepted a sponsor exemption to play in the LPGA State Farm Classic July 17-20 at Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, Ill.

This will be Wie’s first appearance at the State Farm. She has also accepted a sponsor exemption into the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic the week prior in Ohio.

Her next LPGA event will be the Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill May 8-11 in Williamsburg, Va. She’ll play the Wegmans LPGA June 19-22 in Pittsford, N.Y.

“Michelle is a fan favorite and will be a welcome addition to this year’s tournament,” said State Farm Classic executive director Kate Peters.

Wie’s only LPGA start this season came at the Fields Open in Hawaii, where she opened with a 69 but finished last among the players who made the cut.

Wie, 18, was given one of two exemptions into the tournament. The other will be awarded to the winner of the Duramed Futures Players Championship June 13-15 in Decatur, Ill.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to play in this year’s LPGA State Farm Classic,” Wie said. “I have had the good fortune of making a career out of something I love at a very young age and tournaments like the State Farm Classic allow me to give something back to the community and fans.”

What exactly is you giving back to the community?

Does she really think fans are showing up to see her incredible talent (instead of just showing up hoping to see the train wreck in action) ?

I think it bears repeating every time someone hands her a free pass into their event: I cannot for the life of me understand why tournaments are still giving her exemptions. At this point, she should have to earn her way in. She has not done anything worthy of a free pass in a year and a half.

I was unaware that missing cuts, withdrawing with lame injuries or finishing last in events constituted a career. shocking
I guess at Stanford they must teach people a different meaning of the term!  cheesyf
Between her so called career accomplishments and her career threatening wrist injury she received while jogging, the girl is an absolute mess.  russian

Is Nike kicking in some sponsorship to these tourneys if they take her? Seems it is the only way they can get some potential visibility and marketing out there.

I wish she would give up for awhile and concentrate on her education. That is a lot more important than playing in Men's tournaments.

Wie enters qualifying for US Women's Open

Michelle Wie was among 1,236 players who have entered the U.S. Women's Open, the first time she will go through open qualifying for a major since she was in the eighth grade.

The USGA released the list of approved entries Thursday. It was the fifth consecutive year the number exceeded 1,000, and this year's number was only slightly lower than the 1,251 entries a year ago.

The Women's Open will be held June 26-29 at Interlachen outside Minneapolis.

Wie, now a freshman at Stanford, submitted her entry last week, well before the Tuesday deadline. She is exempt from the first stage of local qualifying because she played in the U.S. Women's Open last year, withdrawing during the second round.

Once a promising phenom, Wie's career has been in a nose dive since she tried to play through injuries to both wrists last year. She missed the cut or withdrew from five LPGA Tour events, and finished near the bottom at two other events.

Wie has played only once this season, tying for 72nd at the Fields Open in Hawaii.

She was 13 when she won a playoff in sectional qualifying to earn a spot in the 2003 U.S. Women's Open at Pumpkin Ridge, where she tied for 39th. The USGA awarded her a special exemption the following year, primarily because the money she would have earned on the LPGA Tour had she not been an amateur would have been enough to qualify.

Wie tied for 13th to earn an exemption to the 2005 U.S. Open, and her popularity was such that the LPGA Championship changed its criteria in 2005 to allow for one amateur - Wie - to compete. The Honolulu native continued to play well enough to earn invitations and exemptions to the four majors in 2006 and 2007.

Now, the U.S. Women's Open might be the only major she is eligible to play - provided she qualifies.

Wie has chosen the Woodmont Country Club in Maryland as her sectional qualifying site on June 9. That's where most LPGA Tour players will try to qualify, and it will offer the most spots to the Women's Open.

The USGA said the youngest person to enter was Samantha Wagner, an 11-year-old from Easton, Pa.

Sixty players already are exempt from qualifying, led by defending champion Cristie Kerr. Anyone finishing among the top 35 on the LPGA Tour money list after the Ginn Tribute on June 1 also will be allowed to skip qualifying.

She might  begin to regain some "respect" if she can qualify for events like she should have had to do all along.

She asked for a sponsor's exemption to the Ginn event presented by Annika!  They of course said no. rofley

Remember she withdrew (from the Ginn) last year after playing poorly, cited a wrist injury, and showed up 2 days later at Bulle Rock and was seen hitting balls.

She's got gall.

Wie has no regrets
She's yet to find her professional path, but Michelle Wie isn't questioning her previous career decisions

Michelle Wie has played in one tournament this year, finishing tied for 72nd at the Fields Open in Honolulu in February.

Paula Creamer won that event, the first of her two LPGA victories so far this season and fourth of her five career wins as a professional.

Wie, 18, is playing in the Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill on a sponsor's exemption as she tries to rebound from an injury-plagued 2007, when she missed the cut or withdrew from five tournaments and completed just three, finishing 84th, tied for 69th and 19th.

Creamer, 21, is trying to win back-to-back tournaments and top $5 million in career prize money after beating Juli Inkster in a playoff in last weekend's SemGroup Championship.

"It's amazing how tired you can actually be over a long stretch and how many things that you have to do, but when you're holding that trophy up on Sunday, there's nothing better than that," Creamer said.

Wie, whose 6-foot frame and booming drives have commanded attention since she was a preteen, has yet to experience that feeling.

It's been six years since Wie, then 12, became the youngest player to qualify for an LPGA event, and five since she finished tied for 39th in the 2003 U.S. Women's Open at 13. In between, there have been failed attempts to make cuts on the PGA Tour, marketing deals worth millions and plenty of armchair analysis of what critics see as overexposure since Wie turned pro a week before her 16th birthday in October 2005.

"I don't regret any choices that I made when I was younger," Wie said. "You only have one try at life, and whether it's a good decision or a bad decision, it is a decision, and what are you gonna do? There's nothing I can do about it. I just learn to accept things in life. Things happen, and you've just got to move forward."

Wie said the left wrist she sprained in March after breaking three bones in it last year feels better, and she's eager to play tournament golf for the first time in more than two months.

"I just want to get out and play already," said Wie, who took the spring semester off from her classes at Stanford and spent the last month honing her game at David Leadbetter's Golf Academy in central Florida. "... Maybe I'll play really great. Maybe I'll make a couple of mistakes here and there. I can't really be God and determine all my lucky bounces and all of that. I've put in the hard work. I know that I did that. So there's nothing more I can do. I just have to go out there and play."

With four of her six sponsor exemptions for 2008 left after the $2.2 million Mich Ultra Open, Wie plans to play the Wegmans LPGA in June and two tournaments in July. Longer-term, she has her eye on a permanent spot on the LPGA Tour in 2009. The likeliest ways to do that would be finishing in the top 90 of 2008 money-winners (that cutoff was at $91,595 last year) or making a successful trip to qualifying school.

Wie, who ranked No. 4 in Forbes' list of Top 20 Earners Under 25 with $19 million in 2007, said it would be "an honor" to play full time on the tour, which would also provide her with a haven she hasn't had in her pro career.

"When you're playing great, it doesn't really matter," Wie said. "Where it matters is when you actually have an injury or something, where you can be like, 'I'm not gonna play this year,' and then have a place to come back."

Creamer, who became the LPGA's youngest winner (18 years, 9 months and 17 days) when she won the 2005 Sybase Classic four days before graduating high school, said she doesn't resent the unorthodox path that may lead Wie to the LPGA Tour. But she said the tour has "a lot of good players that are playing well" now.

"I think her playing it helps it, but at the same time, I think we're doing pretty good," Creamer said.

Whatever Wie's future holds, her focus will be on her game. A big test of it begins Thursday.

"I've just got to think about every shot, about the course, about the tournament," she said. "... I'm hitting the ball a lot more solidly, and we'll see what happens this week."
