Can you play as well with the old stuff?

I went out a couple of weeks ago with a set of Titleist Tour Model irons and a couple of of persimmons that were made in the 60s, hit balls with them for about an hour, and then went out and played. He had some ziploc bags of these ancient TopFlites that hurt my ears when I hit them, so no telling how old they were. My driving distance was way down, but I hit 10/14 fairways averaging about 230 off the tee. The irons were not as hard to hit as I thought they would be, but I found that I needed to hit an extra club or two with the old irons. However, the sweet spot on them is definitely dime sized. So, on a 220 yard par 3, I'm forced to hit a 2 instead of my usual 4, which is a huge difference. A lot of the time with the old irons I felt like I absolutely flushed one, and it ended up about 5 yards short of the green, so figure 15 yards short of the target. All in all, I shot 84 on a 6900 yard course with this old stuff, so I wasn't too disappointed since I average between 74-78 on the same course. The biggest factor was that I couldn't get to the par 5's in two, and the 400+ par 4's left me hitting 2-4 irons most of the time. I did manage to have 180 left to the hole on a 440 hole, so that was the long drive of the day with ye old persimmon. All in all, it was fun as hell. I think that playing with a new ball would have made a giant difference, since on a couple of holes I hit some extra tee shots with a couple of gamers I had in my bag (one plattys) that went about 15 yards further. Those old balls just balloon straight up and die. Trajectory is halfway decent with the new balls. It'd be rad to see a tour match using only old equipment, even though I doubt the scores would change a ton, depending on the course.
