anyone have a good method to figure out what lie angle is best for you - without going to a fitter or spending big bucks?

Easy:

Plexiglass under the ball, masking tape on the sole of your club.  Change masking tape for each swing.

Note: don't trust range mat marks because of the fuzziness and cushion -- inaccurate.

I'm going to bump this for a question. How do you figure how much it has to be bent flat in relation to how far towards the heel the mark is from the center?

As an idication 1/4 inch corresponds to about 1 degree.

Depending upon the sole design and leading edge setup, this is not an exact science and can also depend upon the exact delivery of the club to the ball.

You can also use a vertical line on the ball and work from the mark it leaves on the face. I find for people not keen to hit balls from a solid surface this works great and can yield some good results and allow me to track contact relative to the centre too.

Soooo, If you copy my stuff, or say something I didn't say, or make the look like a dumb ass.
I'm gonna get my mom to come after you and then you can sort your issues out with her, God knows I've tried for the last 31 years and well lets just say. I give up.
Go on, quote me, make me look stupid. Its on your head.
You have been warned.

That is the way I had my J33's adjusted and I thought it was much more accurate.  As you say, if the lie angle is correct you will hit the center of the face.

I suppose either way would work as long as you do each club in the set.  Visually, however, I think having the ball leave a line on the clubface is a better indicator of where on the face you are hitting the ball.  Tape on the sole of the club can sometimes be hard to read where the mark is when you hit off a lie board.
