Lets talk about how Tiger wins. And it sure not with his driver. His longest drive this year is 344 and he is ranked 832nd. He wins by hitting greens and making putts. That driver doesn't make those eagles.

Okay, so you're in a pro-am playing with Tiger. Par 3--195-ish to the hole, island green, iffy wind, you've never played the hole. Tiger has the honor because he birdied the last hole and you had a "good" double. Woods' ball lands a few yards short of the pin and stops just past it. You happen to see which iron he hit when he held his finish. So, you reach into your bag and pull out: 1) Same iron, "I'm as long as Tiger because his irons are 2 degrees weaker than mine", 2) One club longer, he's Tiger Woods & 90% of his peers can't match his distances with the same club, 3) Two clubs longer--trying to be optomistically realistic, 4) Three clubs longer--"sounds about right to me", 5) One less club---"...his irons are weak lofted and the Swing-O-Lator at Jiffy's Golf Hut sez I swing my Big Dog 125 MPH", 6) Doesn't matter---"whatever I pull I'll chunk it into the water as nervous as I am..." added 7) Four clubs longer--- added 8) Five clubs longer---

Well... assuming he took a 7-iron, I'd have to go with choice 3... maybe choice 4 if we're into the wind. Dave

OK. Time for me to buy in...... You know you secretly wanted me to. In some parts of the bag I have Tiger....just. In other he has me, just. I can fly 3 iron pretty comfortably 250 but off a tee or a real good lie, but not 230 from a thin lie in the fairway, I"m not that clever. He has me by a bit on 5 iron thru 9 iron, I think mainly because my lofts are so weak and our wedges are about the same. I carry a 47* 9 iron and go in 3-5* gaps from there. From PGA tour standard lies I think my carry numbers would be pretty similar or slighty more but what really impresses me is that he makes good enough contact to differentiate 10 yards between 3 and 4 iron. Thats insane. My 3 and 4 go exactly the same distance depending upon wether I can hit the ball on the bit with the lines (grooves ) I've got him from the tee. But only just. I think I'd carry it 8 or 10 futher and I'm certain he can fly his 3 wood waaaay further than me, purely as a result of contact. As for the pro am situation, most of the time we'd have the same club in hand, maybe I'd have 1/2 a club more to account for the fact that I suck. N.B. No I am not as good as Tiger!. If you lined me up on the 1st at Augusta with 10,000 people watching I'm pretty sure my contact would be that bad I'd kill 7 of them about 30 out down the right!

Interesting thread...my only comment is, who cares how far you hit this club or that, when the game is about controlling the ball? This is where Tiger and the PGA guys excel, and we amateurs should be. I play with many of you long hitters, and mostly beat y'all like drums. Why? Short game skill and distance /trajectory control. I can hit my 5 iron between 150 and 180, since the scorecard only logs 'how many' not 'how did you get there' I guess the only number that really matters is score. Go ahead, flame me now...

So is it 195ish to the hole, or to the front? I could go with option 4, or the unlisted option 7 -4 clubs longer, or maybe even the unlisted option 8 -5 clubs longer.

If it is 195 to the front than three clubs longer and hope I can spin the 4-iron enough to keep it from going off the back.
If it is 195 to the flag I would try my 5 iron.
Not saying I wouldn't pull either into the water but I would honestly rather have it land short than power one over the green.
Short means you didn't get it all, hit it thin/fat, wind got it - whatever.
Long means you had no faith in your shot, panicked and pulled the wrong club.

I agree with you. I'm an average hitter, maybe somewhat longer than the guys I normally play with. But personally, I don't care if I had to hit a 6-iron into a hole, while my partners hit 7 or 8. Once I put the club down I can't see the number anyway. As long as I pull the shot off, I'm happy. I guess it's an ego thing. That said, hitting the driver a long way IS important. Jeff

Well, 195 sounds like a feathered, high soft fade Rescue TP 19*, at least for me.

Jeff Agreed, finding a driver you can bomb definitely helps, but generally only if you find fairways. 300 yeard carries 25* offline are still in the trees. I only carry a driver 240 to 270 depending on the day and my swing. Like Mark Calcavechia stated in interview few weeks back, the PGA guys hit it 300+ with regularity because 1, they are that good and 2, because most of the younger guys are really strong - Tiger looks like he could play free safety for half the NFL ;-D

I think there are plenty of PGA guys-- Tiger included-- who gladly take 300 yards in the rough over 275 in the fairway. It's the whole "bomb and gouge" philosophy. I don't really have that skill, so it's fairways and (hopefully) greens for me. Jeff

Clarified above, options added.
Tee could be above or below the hole. You're not sure what the wind will do. Your caddie is blind drunk and no help.
Your best information is you saw what iron Tiger used.Okay, so you're in a pro-am playing with Tiger. Par 3--195-ish to the hole, island green, iffy wind, you've never played the hole. If you know it's an island green and it's X distance to the hole then you should know what club to hit off the bat... am I wrong? Regardless of what iron Tiger hits I'm either hitting a 5 or 6 iron depending on wind, 7 if it's behind us... -Lucky7

Keep in mind that these numbers reflect his controlled, 70-80% swing. Consider scenario like number 7 at Wachovia on Sunday when he was along the hazard line, ball in deep rough, 196 yards to the pin...no problem....8 iron to the middle of the green...one putt...tournament. How about last year at Firestone when he hit the ball to the clubhouse rooftop. That was a pitching wedge 150 yds from the green and he flew it another 50 yds.

Lets talk about how Tiger wins. And it sure not with his driver. His longest drive this year is 344 and he is ranked 832nd. He wins by hitting greens and making putts. That driver doesn't make those eagles. The driver is the worst club in his bag. Think about it. All the times he got screwed was with crappy drives.

I can take his distance numbers and match him. I can't match him in scoring though. I think at 75% my distances are about on par with his though.
